Daiya going nationwide
Daiya Foods is ramping up production of its popular vegan cheese products ahead of its nationwide launch in October.

Sept. 15, 2010, Vancouver – Daiya Foods
is ramping up production of its popular vegan cheese products ahead of its
nationwide launch in October.

In the past, the cheeses were exclusively
available through two small food distributors marketing to cafes and
independent foodservice outlets in Eastern and Western Canada. But now that
approval has come down from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to market the
vegan cheeses as mozzarella and cheddar style shreds in the retail market,
Daiya is looking to expand their reach.

“Locally in Vancouver we had some
restaurants and cafes that have been picking product from our Vancouver
location,” said Kristen Bourke, brand manager for Daiya Foods. “We are now
bringing on national distribution to make the product more easily accessible.”

Daiya’s vegan products are designed to offer
the same taste and melt as other cheeses, making them an alternate choice for
vegans and people with food allergies or lactose intolerance.

Following the nationwide launch, the vegan
cheeses will be available through Horizon Distribution and UNFI Distribution.
According to Bourke, Daiya is currently exploring other possible avenues to
distribute the products, which will be sold in two sizes. The foodservice
products are sold in 5 lb bags, with three bags per case. The new retail size
will sell as 8 oz units, with 12 bags in each case.

Canadian retailers are currently restricted
to selling an imported American product called Vegan Gourmet. This product is
not available for foodservice accounts.
