Pizza up 15% on Canadian menus, pizza prices up 2% over last year

Pizza was seen 15 per cent more often on Canadian menus in the last year and pizza prices rose more than two per cent, according to new data by research firm Technomic.

Some of the fastest-growing ingredients on pizza over the past year are plum tomatoes ( up 857.1 per cent), sushi (up 64.0 per cent), parsley (up 47.4 per cent) and avocado (up 42.1 per cent).

Sushi is most often appearing as sushi pizza, a quirky global cuisine mashup featuring sushi ingredients in pizza form. Another unique pizza ingredient on the rise are avocados, appearing on sushi pizza as well as Mexican-inspired pizzas.

The fastest-growing types of pizza over the past year include cheeseburger pizza (up 62.5 per cent), steak pizza (up 32.0 per cent) and Latin-inspired pizza (up 29.9 per cent).
