September 25, 2009, Canada – Small businesses are concerned that the impending 13 per cent harmonized
sales tax will scare off customers while encouraging the underground
economy, reports the Toronto Star.
The online poll of 2,991 members of the Canadian Federation of
Independent Business showed that 75 per cent were concerned "customers will
not like higher tax rates on some of my firm's goods (and) services," writes the Star.
Another 44 per cent feared it would "encourage growth in the underground economy in my sector."
