May 3, 2011, Toronto – The Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA) today congratulated Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party for winning a majority government, and Jack Layton and the NDP for becoming the Official Opposition.

“We look forward to working with the new government on food, tax and labour policies that make sense for foodservice, one of Canada’s most important industries,” says Garth Whyte, CRFA’s president and CEO. “MP candidates visiting restaurants daily on the campaign trail got a clear message from our operators – restaurant are too important to Canada’s economy and social fabric to be ignored.”

In a press release noting that the industry is facing rising food prices, labour shortages and food supply challenges, as well as other regulatory, tax and nutrition issues, the CRFA urged the new government to “take a more integrated approach to agri-food policy.”

The CRFA also recommended establishing a new Cabinet Committee on Food, which would filter all government policies.
