Dec. 10, 2014, Simcoe, Ont. – Kathryn and David Kitchen of The Pizza Mill, in Salisbury, N.B., have been awarded the Saputo Foodservice Pizza With Purpose award for making generosity to their community an integral part of their business.

Both Kathryn and Dave were raised in Salisbury and are now raising their own family in the town they say is very supportive: “Our customers have been there to support us and help our business to become as successful as it is,” they say in their entry.

Since opening the doors of their pizzeria in 1998, the couple and their young family have focused on giving locally. Here’s a taste of what the Kitchens have been up to: for the past four years, they have raised $2,000 annually by selling redeemable Charity Pizza Cards and keeping aside a portion to donate toward charity causes and emergencies that arise throughout the year such as flooding and medical procedures not covered by insurance.

They presented $1,000 to a deserving student of the 2014 graduating class of the local high school and marked the opening of a new local food bank by launching birthday coupons for its clients and their family members.

The Pizza Mill will receive a $2,500 cash prize from Saputo Foodservice for these community efforts and a cover story in Canadian Pizza. Watch for a profile of this caring couple who have faced crises and challenges within their own family and are putting that firsthand understanding into action.
