Dec. 15, 2014, Toronto – Restaurants Canada has launched a
petition called #CanTheDeal in response to a secret agreement between The Beer Store and the LCBO in Ontario that came
to light last week.
The agreement, signed in 2000, gives the foreign-owned Beer
Store monopoly exclusive rights to sell beer in 12- and 24-packs, which leads
to higher prices for consumers and licensees.
“Restaurant and bar owners in Ontario pay ridiculously high
prices for a case of beer. For some brands the price is 30 to 50 per cent higher
than what consumers pay,” says James Rilett, Ontario vice-president for
Restaurants Canada, in a news release. “It’s time for Premier Wynne to can this
deal and bring competition, fair pricing, and choice to the table.”
The #CanTheDeal petition is online at Change.org .
