Sept. 30, 2008, Edmonton, Atla. – Canada's world-champion pizza spinner, Juan
Hermosillo, has landed in Edmonton, marking the official start of National
Pizza Month, a special month-long observance first proclaimed in the U.S. by
Congress in 1987.
To celebrate National Pizza Month, Pizza 73 has enlisted Toronto-based
Juan Hermosillo to help raise awareness for the brand's Pizza Month fundraiser
in support of breast cancer prevention and treatment.
"Pizza plays an important role in the lives of our customers and society
as a whole," explains Pat Finelli, Chief Marketing Officer for Pizza Pizza
Limited, Pizza 73's parent company.
"This is a great opportunity to show our
customers that we really appreciate their support, and to introduce a new
fundraising campaign that will improve the lives of Albertans."
Throughout the month of October, Pizza 73 will donate a percentage of
proceeds to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation with every 200 gram bag of
M&Ms candy sold – while supplies last – to help fund the battle against breast
cancer. The goal is to raise more than $25,000 during the period.
As part of Pizza 73's National Pizza Month kick-off efforts, Juan
Hermosillo will share his pizza-spinning pizzazz with Albertans through live
televised appearances in Edmonton and Calgary, as well as special performances
at Pizza 73's grand opening celebrations for its newest three locations in
Leduc, Calgary and Medicine Hat.
Today the art of pizza spinning has gained an international following,
thanks in large part to Mexican-born Canadian Juan Hermosillo.
Throughout the
world, master pizzaiolos like Juan mesmerize crowds while they perform flips,
handstands and human pyramids, all the while tossing and spinning dough.
"Juan is a world-champion athlete, performer and ambassador who has
helped raised awareness for the ancient art form of pizza making," says
Finelli.
"He reminds us that pizza is meant to be fun, sociable and adaptable
to suit a variety of tastes and needs. We are happy to be bringing the
celebration of National Pizza Month to Alberta and to providing Albertans with
an opportunity to show their support for those battling against breast
cancer."
