magazine’s Chef of the Year, clinched the silver spot in the Traditional Finals
at the International Pizza Challenge yesterday at the International Pizza Expo
in Las Vegas. In a sibling coup, Carmelo Oliveri, his brother, his chef’s
assistant and fellow competitor, earned the world pizza champions title in the
Traditional category and the blind box bake-off to be named world’s best pizza
maker.Pictured here from right to left, Carmelo and Oliveri.

The two brothers ran a pizzeria in Italy together for 20
years. Carmelo resides in Italy running a pizza school and Oliveri moved to
Ottawa three years ago, where he worked as a kitchen manager at The Grand
Pizzeria and Bar at the time of his entry in our contest, and since his
departure during the contest has been running an Italian food catering business
with pizza as its primary offering. His new restaurant is registered and has a
fully developed menu and once open will incorporate his current catering business.
Oliveri narrowly edged Marina Rondinelli of Rondo’s and Pizza Plus in Bright’s
Grove, Ont., who submitted a ‘Blazing BBQ’ pulled pork pizza. Rondinelli
competed in Las Vegas in the non-traditional category with the same recipe.
