Montreal – Montreal Pizzafest, a friendly competition among local pizzerias, recently crowned winners in three categories with help from guest judge Anthony Falco.

The annual event, held Sept. 11 to 24, put pizza makers from 55 pizzerias in Montreal, Laval and the south shore of Montreal – along with their creations – in the spotlight.

“We try to reach the population with special pizzas made for the occasion by the participants,” said Mathieu Fortin, organizer of the weeklong event. “For the second part of the event, we have a little jury who pass by each restaurant to judge and recommend the pizza tasted.”

The goal is to create an exchange among pizzeria owners, Fortin said.

Organizers held a public vote for the best special pizza and invited Anthony Falco, a pizza consultant from New York City and creator of the brand, Rad Times Pizza, to judge five finalists in three categories.

“It was the first time for Anthony in Montreal and he loved it!” Fortin said.

The three categories are Al Taglio, Neo-Napolitan and Delivery pizza/Gourmet style.

After the public vote, local operator and judge Giacomo Biello visited pizzerias for the initial tasting. The five finalists in each category were judged by Falco.

The three big winners were chosen based on personal opinion, knowledge of pizza making and overall enjoyment of the pizza.

1. First place “Al Taglio” San Gennaro, Montreal
2. First place “Neo-Napolitan” Liolà Pizzeria, Laval
3. First place “Delivery pizza/Gourmet” Vincent sous-marins et pizzas Mtl-Nord, Montreal
