Ottawa – Gabriel Pizza is feeding 14,000 nurses doctors and support staff at five Ottawa hospitals over three days to celebrate The Ottawa Hospital’s Staff Appreciation Week.
The event takes place Sept. 10-12, and on Thursday, Sept. 12, alone the pizza chain expects to serve close to 6,000 people.
Each year for the past five years, Gabriel Pizza, a chain with more than 40 locations in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, has partnered with The Ottawa Hospital for this community event.
Meals are being provided free of charge to the hospital network’s three main campuses – The Ottawa General, The Civic and The Riverside – as well as the Irving Greenberg Cancer Centre and its two administrative offices. The Ottawa Hospital executive team are on hand at each event to help serve slices to all the staff.
“Essentially it takes 15 of our 41 locations to help prepare cook and deliver 3,500 pizzas (28,000) slices,” said Cory Boast, vice-president of Gabriel Pizza Franchise Corporation. “Our wonderful franchisees and corporately owned locations cook and deliver in batches of 80 to 100 pizzas every 15 minutes over a four-hour period from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with additional drops for nightshift and overnight shifts.”
Over the past five years we have cooked delivered and help serve over 17,000 pizzas to the Ottawa Hospital, Boast said.
The chain also has helped contribute to the financing for a waiting room at the Rose Garden Health Centre, a new breast health facility at the Ottawa Hospital, which was completed in 2018.
“Every day, these dedicated professionals show their commitment to making our community a better place through the care that they provide, whether they are helping to deliver one of the 6,166 babies born at the hospital, or providing care for one of the 179,651 patients who visited the Emergency Department or participated in one of the 825 active clinical trials (FY 2018/19),” The Ottawa Hospital said in a news release. “During Staff Appreciation Week, The Ottawa Hospital wants to take the time to say thank you for all that they do!”
