October 18, 2011, Toronto – A record 47 wines struck gold at the 2011 InterVin International Wine Awards, an intensive three-day blind tasting competition staged at White Oaks Resort & Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.
The top-scoring wines were selected by a panel of distinguished sommeliers, wine writers and winemakers from a pool of nearly 1,100 wines from 15 countries. They encompassed a striking variety of styles.
"The gold medallists from the 2011 InterVin International Wine Awards share little in common. They are the product of six different countries, produced by wineries of varying size and represent a wide array of styles and expressions," explained Christopher Waters, editor of VINES Magazine and head judge of the InterVin International Wine Awards. "The one thing that these singular wines do share, however, is our judges' respect and admiration for being truly exceptional."
Judges included internationally acclaimed sommeliers Lindsay Groves and Zoltan Szabo, respected wine writers Linda Bramble and Daenna Van Mulligen and celebrated winemakers Darryl Brooker and Craig McDonald.
The panel saved their highest scores for Castello di Gabbiano 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva (best red), Inniskillin Wines 2008 Riesling Icewine (best sweet wine) and Thirty Bench Wine Makers 2010 Small Lot Gewürztraminer (best white). That triumphant trio leads a list of 580 award winners, which include 47 gold, 123 silver and 410 bronze medallists. In addition, 33 top-scoring wines that retail for less than $15 also received a Judges' Choice for Value citation.
