Aug. 15, 2008 – Health Canada is telling people with milk allergies to
stay away from two more health products containing acidophilus because
they've been found to contain trace amounts of milk protein.

The
products – labelled non-dairy – are Natural Factors Super Strength
Cal'dophilus (180 capsules) and Natural Factors Super Strength
Cal'dophilus (90 capsules).

Acidophilus and bifidus are common
ingredients of probiotics, which are live microorganisms that provide a
health benefit to the host when administered in sufficient quantities.

People
who are allergic to milk can experience a variety of symptoms when
exposed to even small amounts of milk proteins, including breathing
difficulties which in some cases can become fatal.

They should
return the products to the point of purchase. If they've used the
products and have concerns about their health, they should consult a
doctor, the agency advised.

Last Friday, Health Canada issued the
same warning about a number of brands of unauthorized
acidophilus-containing health products labelled as "non-dairy." It said
it's aware of a Canadian case of anaphylactic reaction possibly
associated with the use of one of these products.

The earlier
warning covered Truly Premium All Naturals Acidophilus with Bifidus (50
capsules); London Naturals Acidophilus with Bifidus (90 capsules);
London Naturals Acidophilus with Bifidus (180 capsules); London
Naturals Acidophilus with Bifidus (30 capsules); Acidophilus with
Bifidus & FOS – Webber Naturals (180 capsules); Acidophilus with
Bifidus & FOS – Webber Naturals (60 capsules); and Rexall
Pro-Biotic (60 capsules).
