New Montefalco wines coming to LCBO this fall

The Montefalco Wine Consortium and Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario are working together to introduce Sagrantino di Montefalco several new wines coming to the LCBO Vintages section.

The following new wines are being introduced this fall:

• Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Rosso DOC 2011 – $21.00, release date: Sept. 19, 2015
• Scacciadiavoli Grechetto Umbria IGT 2014 – $14.95, release date: Oct. 31, 2015
• Arnaldo Caprai DOC  Anima Umbra Rosso 2013 – $16.95, release date: Nov. 28, 2015

Montefalco wines have been available in the Ontario market since 2014. Currently, wines by Arnaldo Caprai, Scacciadiavoli, Perticaia, Colpetrone, Le Cimate, and Tenuta Bellafonte are available by private order as well as at select restaurants.

“Sagrantino is a bold and tannic varietal, with a powerful footing and a fruity bouquet,” said the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Wine Desk in a news release. “Rustic and hearty fare such as prime cuts of steak, game meat, and aromatic cheeses will find a willing accomplice in this dry and robust red.”

“The grape dates back to 1549, and was originally cultivated by Franciscan monks who used it as a sacramental wine. By the 1960s, the varietal nearly disappeared; however, due to the efforts of a handful of producers, as well as the Montefalco Wine Consortium, it made a strong comeback. Today, more than 2,500 acres of Sagrantino are planted in the area, and it is on its way to competing with other acclaimed Italian wines such as Brunello, Amarone, and Barbaresco. The region itself has a long history, and boasts some of Italy’s most striking landscapes. Thanks to its hilltop perch, it boasts stunning views of Umbria’s rippling hills and olive groves from nearly every angle. Views are characterized by the fiery red leaves of the Sagrantino grape, which has been cultivated in the region since the Middle Ages.”
