In the lead-up to the Oct. 14 election, the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA) has created a Federal Election Tool Kit to help foodservice operators speak to candidates about key issues facing the industry.

The tool kit, available at www.crfa.ca/federalelection , focuses on the industry’s top five federal issues:

Labour shortage

The single biggest issue facing the foodservice industry, Canada’s labour shortage must be addressed by removing barriers to labour market participation by Canadians and foreign workers alike.

Nutrition

Restaurants are responding to customer demand for more menu options and nutrition information.  Issues such as trans fat, however, must involve the entire supply chain, as recommended by the federal Trans Fat Task Force.

Food supply

Restaurant operators rely on high-quality, competitively priced food and beverage products. These supplies are threatened by Canada’s outmoded supply management system for dairy and poultry.

GST/PST harmonization

A fair sales tax system treats all food equally. Harmonization would have a severe impact in Western Canada, where there is no PST on restaurant meals, and in Ontario, where the PST applies only to meals above $4.00.

Credit card fees

In recent months, Canada’s largest credit card companies have introduced new “premium” cards for consumers.  But Canadian business owners – and their customers – will be left holding the bill.

“Canada’s foodservice industry employs more than one million people in communities across Canada,” says Joyce Reynolds, CRFA Executive Vice President of Government Affairs.  “Elections are an ideal time to let future MPs know about the tremendous economic and social contributions of our industry, and how the federal government can help us create even more jobs and investment.”

In addition to the Election Tool Kit, CRFA is sending industry fact sheets to candidates from all five major parties and polling party leaders on key issues.  Their responses will be posted on the CRFA website to allow foodservice operators to see where parties stand on issues that impact their businesses.
