News

February 7, 2011, Simcoe, ON – Canadian Pizza magazine has
picked the finalists for its annual Chef of the Year competition, whose recipes
will be put to the test at a brand new location this year.

Usually the field of entries is narrowed down to three, but
due to a high number of submissions and a difficult tie-breaker, Canadian Pizza
is baking four recipes on Feb. 9. This year’s finalists are Marina Rondinelli
of Rondo’s & Pizza Plus in Bright’s Grove, Ont; Tom Stankiewicz of Bondi’s
Pizza in London, Ont. (2009 Chef of the Year), Rick Nixon of Itza Ristorante
& Pizzeria in Nelson, B.C. and Pasqualino Oliveri of Pizzeria La Regina in
Ottawa.

For the first time, the bake day will be hosted by Moretti
Forni at their Dupont Ave. location in Toronto. Moretti Forni is providing a
full range of oven types to suit the preferences of the finalists, who are
shipping the ingredients to the kitchen on Feb. 9. Canadian Pizza magazine
staff will carefully assemble and bake the pies, which will then be tasted and
scored by a panel of judges. This year’s champion will win a trip to Las Vegas
to compete in a guaranteed spot in the finals of the ‘Traditional Category’ at
the International Pizza Challenge at the expo from March 1-3, 2011, a $1000
cash prize and a cover feature in Canadian Pizza magazine’s April/May edition.
One runner-up will receive a trip to Las Vegas that includes a guaranteed spot
in the preliminary round of the challenge. Accommodations, flight and
admissions are included in the trip packages. Thank you to Saputo
Foodservice, our 2011 sponsor.
