April 23, 2009, Simcoe, Ont. – Fellow Canadian pizzaiolos
were amongst the judges, competitors and top ten finishers at the recent World
Pizza Games in Salsomaggiore Terme, Italy.

Stephen Goddard of Pomodori
in New Brunswick placed eighth in the difficult Pizza Napoletana category.
Goddard says out of 1,000 points they were only 50 points from first place and
25 points from third.

“We
were very pleased with how the competition went,” he says. “We did not expect
to finish that well in that tough of a category.” Pomodori has had an
outstanding month, he says, having received a lot of mileage from CBC, CTV and
local news coverage of the achievement. The restaurant is just approaching its
one year anniversary. Goddard was also selected to the top three in Canadian
Pizza magazine’s Chef of the Year contest.

Diana Coutu of Diana’s Gourmet Pizzeria in
Winnipeg, columnist for Canadian Pizza magazine and runner up for its 2008 Chef
of the Year contest, was invited to judge this year’s World Pizza Games. She is
the first Canadian judge in 18 years of the Games. Her husband Pierre Coutu
competed in the Fastest Slap category and did very well. His time was one
minute and 40 seconds, which Coutu noted was close to Michael Shepard’s, a
multi-time holder of the title.
