A number of Winnipeg pizza store operators had to scramble to find delivery boxes in mid-January following a fire that destroyed a Winnipeg box manufacturer’s warehouse. Instabox (Winnipeg) provides the delivery boxes for about 20 different pizza operations locally.

The fire started on January 24 in the evening. Instabox spokesperson Melody Savage reports that about $180,000 worth of finished pizza boxes was burned.

“We were expecting an order of boxes on the 25th (the day after the fire),” says Diane Kiamil, who manages Niakwa Pizza’s seven locations in Winnipeg. “We go through 10,000 boxes a month. It was hard replacing our order on short notice.”

Fortunately the fire didn’t damage the plant proper or equipment. Instabox closed for just a couple of days and, Savage said, was hoping to catch up with production by the end of January.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation at press time.
